Malacca closes one flood relief centre at noon
MALACCA: One of the four flood relief centres in Malacca was closed at noon, leaving the other three with 154 evacuees.
Malacca Civil Defence Force director Lt Col (PA) Effendy Ali said the three centres had 154 evacuees as at 12.15pm, up from 149 in the morning.
"The Jasin district has the most number of evacuees at 96. They are being housed at Sekoleh Kebangsaan Tehel. In the Alor Gajah district, 40 people are at the Bukit Balai community hall and 18 at the Kampung Pulau community hall," he said in a statement.
Effendy, who is also head of the Malacca Disaster Management Committee Secretariat, said the floods were caused by the overflow of Sungai Durian Tunggal, Sungai Malacca and Sungai Tehel following heavy rain on Monday night.
The five areas hit by the floods were Kampung Bukit Tambun, Kampung Bukit Balai and Kampung Pulau in Alor Gajah and Kampung Tanjung Laboh and Kampung Parit Lampong in Jasin, he said.
He said the weather was improving and the rain was easing off. — Bernama
