THE lives of a young couple were spared, thanks to their wailing infant child. Many others in the remote Xinmo village in the Chinese province of Sichuan were not as lucky as 93 people were reported missing and feared dead in a landslide on Saturday.
Xiao Yanchun, 26, was awoken by her crying 38-day-old son around 6am. She changed his diapers and headed back to bed, but heard a rumbling sound in the distance. The ground started to move underneath her feet.
As rocks and mud began slamming her house and smashing through the windows, she grabbed her infant son and ran out with her husband, Qiao Dashuai.
The WccDaily reported that they climbed their way to safety while their village was being engulfed all around them. They were found by rescuers and brought to a local hospital at 9am.
Xiao's parents, grandmother and two-year-old daughter are still missing. Already, 15 people have been confirmed as dead.
