JOHOR BARU: The two Singaporeans who were detained after they had served a one-day jail sentence by the immigration department because they had breached bail for an earlier crime said state immigration department director Datuk Rohaizi Bahari.
He said Quek Chin Fern,48, and Cheryl Lim,18, were then sent to the Kluang prison on June 22 and on Tuesday transferred to the department's detention centre in Pekan Nanas on Tuesday.
"This is our standard operating procedure. We later transported them in a group to the detention centre with other migrant cases," he said yesterday.
Quek and Lim were arrested on June 18 at 10pm for stealing some items worth RM600 in a shopping mall in Taman University, near Skudai.
Both pleaded guilty for shoplifting and was sentenced to one day jail and fined RM600 in Johor Baru magistrate court on June 22.
Quek and Lim's detention after their one-day jail sentence created a stir when the human rights group Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) wanted to know why the mother and daughter were detained beyond their one day jail sentence.
Rohaizi said, Quek, Lim, and her son Miguel Lim,19 were charged in a special court at the Pekan Nanas Immigration detention Camp for obstructing an Immigration Department officer at a car exit lane in the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex at about 3.30pm on Aug 12, 2016.
The trio claimed trial and have been out on a RM10,000 bail each.
The next trial will be in July.
He said the department had no choice but detain them as they had committed a criminal act during the bail period.
