MBPP to take action against movie company for filming at Penang tomb

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council will take action against a film production company for erecting a makeshift tomb next to the final resting place of Captain Francis Light at the Protestant cemetery in Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah here.
Council secretary Yew Tung Seang said the council only gave approval to the film company to shoot outside the cemetery's compound.

He said the local government was unhappy that filming instead had taken place within the cemetery grounds.

"Let me discuss with the relevant departments first," he told theSun when asked what action will be taken against the film company.

Penang heritage activists had complained about the matter after discovering the mock tomb next to the British captain who opened Penang island as a trading post for colonial Britain in the 1700s.
Penang Heritage Trust (PHT) council member Clement Liang, in a Facebook post, took to task the action of certain quarters in building a mock tomb inside the historical cemetery.
He said the heritage site was not a place for such an activity and the authority should not have allowed it.

The mock tombstone with the name "Danny Song" is believed to be a character in the movie being filmed.

Hong Kong actress Charmain Sheh and actor Cheung Chi Liam were reportedly spotted in Penang to shoot the film last week.

Checks showed the film prop was removed on Monday afternoon.
