BUTTERWORTH: The Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda) is planing to tap the eco-tourism potential of Sungai Perai, a major river on the mainland of the state.

Perda chairman Datuk Shahbudin Yahaya said the river had the potential to develop a river cruise industry.

The Tasek Gelugor MP said Perda has already identified three areas along the river banks as attractions comprising Lebuh Banting, Pengkalan Machang and Air Itam Dalam.

"These three form the 'Golden Triangle' for tourism spots along Sungai Perai," he told theSun recently.

Lebuh Banting and Pengkalan Machang are known for their greenery and houses many fishermen villages.

Air Itam Dalam meanwhile is notable for its marshes which is home to many wildlife including otters, crocodiles and different species of birds.

Shahbudin said these three spots could be developed into eco-tourism attractions to attract visitors who wanted to be close to nature.

He said Perda has been collaborating with the Tourism Ministry and the Malaysia Cooperatives Commission (SKM) to develop the three areas.

He said this included a RM700,000 allocation to construct concrete jetties at the areas so boats for the river cruises could dock and for passengers to board or alight from the ferries.

"Other than jetties, plans to build food courts are also in the pipeline over the next five years.

"The long term the projects will improve the living standards for locals there as it is estimated more than 300 job opportunities will be created.

"The project needs food operators, boat operators and cleaning crew among other jobs to be a success," he said.
