GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government has hit back at Gerakan for wanting to file an injunction to stop the construction of three roads and a proposed undersea tunnel.

State Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow (pix) said the party was trying to sabotage these important infrastructure projects.

The Penang DAP chairman said Gerakan was fearful the party will suffer another severe defeat when the projects were implemented successfully.

He said the party had alleged there were corrupt practices, misinformation and abuse of public funds and that the state strongly denied these allegations.

He said the allegations have been reported to and investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in 2016 and no action was taken against the Penang state government.

The Penang DAP is appalled with Gerakan's intention to file an injunction to stop the three major roads and undersea tunnel project to be implemented,” he said in a statement today.

Chow was responding to Gerakan vice president Dominic Lau who reportedly said the party was considering filing a court injunction to stop the entire project.

He had said the party would make a decision when it had finished their investigation and all its papers were in order.

The roads are a 10.7km dual carriageway paired road with bicycle land from Tanjung Bungah to Teluk Bahang; a 5.2km dual carriageway bypass from Bandar Baru Air ITam to Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu with five interchanges and a 4.2km dual
carriageway to connect the northern fringes of George Town to the eastern corridor of Penang island.

The tunnel is a 7.2km dual carriageway to link Pesiaran Gurney on the island to Bagan Ajam on the mainland.
