Sydney Fish Market to be transformed into new food and dining destination

THE Danish architecture practice 3XN Architects has been entrusted with the redesign of the Sydney Fish Market, relocating it and transforming it into a "world-class" destination for food and dining.
Currently located in Pyrmont, the newly designed market will relocate to Blackwattle Bay, taking up residence on an adjacent wharf, while the former location will become the site of mixed-use development.
"The brief is to rejuvenate Sydney Fish Market and create a world class food and dining destination on the inner harbour that will be dynamic, sustainable, and sympathetic to the local area," said Barry Mann, Head of Projects Portfolio for the New South Wales government's UrbanGrowth agency.
The goal is to modernise and improve the site of the Market, while recognising its heritage and "retaining the authentic experience that attracts customers and visitors", said Sydney Fish Market General Manager Bryan Skepper.
More than 60 Australian and international design studios submitted designs for the new market, with 3XN Architects bringing "extensive experience designing award-winning and adaptable waterfront buildings around the world", according to Mann.
The design team headed up by 3XN Architects will also include landscape architects and public art specialists.
Kim Herforth Nielsen, 3XN Architects Creative Director and Founding Partner, said the practice hopes to create "not just an authentic fish market, but an iconic destination for Australia".
Draft designs are coming later this year, with construction expected to start in late 2018. — AFP Relaxnews
