A DISTRAUGHT man armed with a knife enters the Huay Kwang police station in Bangkok. Instead of using force to disarm him, policeman Anirut Malee reasons with him and gives him a hug.
Kudos to the policeman for calming the potentially explosive and violent situation by showing compassion.
Officer Anirut calmly talked and convinced the assailant to hand over his knife.
The 45-year-old man surrendered the knife and accepted the officer's embrace.
"He used to be a musician but had been working as a security guard for three days and had not been paid," Anirut said.
"On top of this, he had had his guitar stolen and it was all stressing him out. I heard him out and sympathised and said I had a guitar to give him, and suggested we go out for a meal together. We were conversing in a Southern Thai dialect."
Anirut told CNN he hugged the man because as a Muslim, hugging is common among men.
The unnamed man was sent to a hospital for an evaluation of his mental state and no charges were reported.
