IPOH: The Perak Umno Youth movement and 12 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the state today lodged a police report against a Facebook user who allegedly insulted the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V and Islam.
The report was made at the Sungai Senam Police Station here at about 10am today.
Among the NGOs were the Pertubuhan Ayahanda Penasihat Insan Malaysia (PAPIM), Gerakan Belia 4B Perak, Gerakan Belia 4B Ipoh Barat, and Suara Anak Muda Perak.
The Facebook user with the name Catt Ginger had allegedly uploaded a photograph of Sultan Muhammad V which had been edited to become insulting, with the words "Selamat Hari Raya" on June 25, the first day Muslims celebrated Aidilfitri.
However, the individual had reportedly uploaded a comment on his Facebook account on July 1 denying he had insulted Sultan Muhammad V and had lodged a police report besides another one with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
According to Ipoh Barat division Umno Youth head Syamsul Baharin Putra Ahmad Shibi, the police report was made as the Facebook posting was believed to have been done to provoke religious sensitivities.
"The act is very insolent as mocking the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is unacceptable and the person responsible must face appropriate action.
"This provocative act has caused unhappiness and anger among Muslims in this country. If unchecked, this provocation can cause racial tension which could affect the harmony of our country," he said.
He urged the police to investigate and cooperate with the MCMC on the matter.
"Up till now, we have only imposed a light sentence, this does not have a preventive effect on the people. I hope the individual involved is imprisoned and not just make a statement of apology. — Bernama
