PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) has expressed regret over a video that shows a Muslim woman with her pet dog “Bubu”.
Jakim director-general Tan Sri Othman Mustapha said Muslims owning dogs and their needless contact with canines were highly disturbing, adding that such actions were against Islamic teachings.
“Jakim deeply regrets her intentional act of touching dogs without any concrete reasons, which is prohibited in Islam,” Othman said in a statement on his Facebook account page today.
“We find her actions to be highly disturbing to Muslims here as they contravene our culture and the religion’s jurisprudence.
“Jakim hopes the individual will stop her actions and repent.”
While Islam allows Muslims to cleanse themselves after touching dogs, this did not mean they could adopt them as pets, Othman said.
The video uploaded as part of a competition by pet lovers group SmartHeart. The video campaign features pet lovers sharing their experiences for the most votes.
