Movie Review - Spider-Man: Homecoming

06 Jul 2017 / 16:37 H.

UNLIKE previous Spider-Man films with dark overtones due to his past (abandonment, guilt over the murder of his Uncle Ben), this one is much more light-hearted, focusing on a 15-year-old Peter Parker (Tom Holland), who was a scene-stealer in last year’s Captain America: Civil War.
The movie begins after the events of The Avengers (2012), with salvage contractor Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton) getting ready to clean up the debris left behind by the Chitauri attack on New York.
However, he is told the job has been taken over by Damage Control, a Stark Industry-aligned company. An angry Adrian and his crew decide to keep the power crystals and other alien tech they have gathered.

Meanwhile, an earnest, eager-to-please Peter is back in New York. Though he is told he is not an Avenger and that he will only be contacted when needed by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) aka Iron Man, Peter remains optimistic that he will be a part of this elite band of superheroes.
Back at his high school, Peter is best friends with Ned (Jacob Batalon), has a crush on Liz (Laura Harrier), gets put down by bully Flash (Tony Revolori), and has to endure scathing comments from Michelle (Zendaya).
Peter also stops crime in his neighbourhood, and has a run-in with some bank robbers armed with super high-tech weaponry.
His obsession with tracking down these criminals – and later their bird-like boss – changes this sweet young man for the worse.
Since this is a superhero film of one of the most likeable superheroes around, Peter will find redemption, and fans of Iron Man will get to see their hero in action too.
Marisa Tomei plays sexy, nurturing Auntie May, while Keaton evokes pity as an everyman who turns into the supervillain Vulture.
All in, this is a fun film, but lacks a certain amount of depth that the previous films had. Holland, to his credit, is a likeable Spider-Man.
Look out for cameos from Captain America (Chris Evans), as well as two post-credit scenes.
