GEORGE TOWN: Please collect your MyKads promptly is the plea by the National Registration Department (NRD) over the uncollected documents languishing in storage with them.
NRD director-general Datuk Mohd Yazid Ramli made the appeal while noting the MyKad was an important element of daily life for Malaysians.
He said the department was now planning to review its procedures to ensure applicants collected the identification document in a timely manner.
He said the NRD was mulling on reducing the validity of temporary identification cards (ICs) issued to those who lost their MyKads from three months to one month so that applicants will collect their new cards.
He pointed out applicants only had to wait for five working days now before collecting their new Mykad, an improvement from the six month wait time before reducing to three months then to 10 days and now to five.
"The government has made great strides to cut down the wait time, the people should collect their MyKads on time," he said in a press conference today after launching the Penang NRD MyKad Printing and Distribution Hub (DPP).
theSun is trying to get the number of uncollected MyKads from the NRD but October 2016 news reports showed the NRD had to destroy 24,458 uncollected MyKads from 2013 to 2015.
On the issue of fake MyKads, Mohd Yazid said there were 762 cases detected from 2014 until July this year; 213 cases in 2014, 93 case sin 2015, 294 cases in 2016 and 162 as of this year.
He said all these cases involved foreigners adding that legal action has been taken and they have been subsequently deported.
"Until now we have not detected any clone MyKads," he added.
