KUALA LUMPUR: The two-day Students Parliament sitting scheduled to take place at the Parliament Building from July 18 will become the platform for varsity students to debate and voice out their opinions and aspirations on the 2015 National Transformation (TN50) initiative.
Malaysian Council of Former Elected Representatives (Mubarak) president Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Rahman said 212 students from 20 public and private institutions of higher learning would attend the sitting, which is the third in its series, to share their views, including on efforts to improve the status of local universities.
"This year, we will collect at least 50 views of the students on TN50 and their aspirations for the young generation over the next 30 years.
"This is the government's latest and more open approach to get the views of the TN50 stakeholders, that is the youths, in setting the future direction of the country," he told reporters after attending the Students Parliament Programme 2017 Main Committee meeting at Mubarak headquarters here today.
He said among the topics expected to be raised during the sitting were issues related to the economy, education, solidarity, students' welfare, environment and sports.
Abdul Aziz explained that the input and ideas shared by the students would be published in a digital form a month after the sitting before they were printed and submitted to the government for further action.
Twenty of the students would also be chosen to participate in a special leadership programme at a renowned university overseas and also to study the Parliamentary procedures in that country.
"Prior to this, we had taken some students to attend a week-long leadership programme at Oxford University to expose them to the British Parliament, leadership transformation and election at Oxford Union.
"This year, we will select other university to give our students different exposure because it is part of the government's efforts to expose the students to the reality of law- and policy-making procedures at the international level," he said. — Bernama
