M'sia proposes Asia-Pacific postal network to be strengthened

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has proposed that the cooperation of the postal network between countries in the Asia-Pacific region be strengthened to support the rapid growth of the digital economy.
Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia Datuk Jailani Johari said the postal network was a strategic infrastructure and crucial component of the digital economic ecosystem which must be strengthened from time to time.
"The cross-border postal service must be streamlined to support the growth of the digital economy in the Asia Pacific region, in the aspects of management, security, and trustworthiness.
"With this, more parties, especially micro, small and medium-scale companies, can participate in digital economic activities and the improvement in the quality of postal services and reduced costs will also benefit consumers," he said in a statement, here in conjunction with the plenary session of the Asian-Pacific Postal Congress yesterday.
At the session, he urged the government to take pro-active steps to rejuvenate the Universal Postal Services policy to ensure that postal services continued to be in tune to the behavioural habits of consumers and fast-changing market demands.
The 12th Asian-Pacific Postal Congress this year was attended by representatives from 32 countries and was held from July 3 to 6.
The Asian Pacific Postal network provides postal services to more than four billion consumers globally.
At the Congress this year, Malaysia through Pos Malaysia was re-appointed to the Asian-Pacific Postal Board for four more years.
The congress also unanimously accepted and passed the transformation plan for the Asian-Pacific Postal Union tabled by Malaysia. — Bernama
