KUALA LUMPUR: "Op Selamat 2017" conducted in conjunction with Aidilfitri has been deemed a success, showing a record drop in the number of road deaths, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.
He said during the 15-day operation, fatal accidents dropped by 12% to 239 cases compared to 273 cases in the same period last year.
"The number of deaths also dropped by 42 cases or 14%, with 257 deaths recorded this year, compared to 299 last year," he said in his speech at the presentation of awards to the best police contingent and district police in conjunction with "Op Selamat 2017" held during the festive period.
An analysis of "Op Selamat 2017" shows that self-destructive factors were the main cause of fatal accidents, namely 65 cases, in addition to other factors such as negligence and carelessness.
According to Khalid, during "Op Selamat 2017", 6,309 operations were carried out with 277,832 summonses issued.
Meanwhile, Khalid said burglary cases also decreased by 165 or 21% to 629 cases this year.
"The success achieved by 'Op Selamat' this time is the result of a comprehensive enforcement approach carried out simultaneously together with PDRM's strategic partners through the Emergency Response Team," he said.
At the event, the Perlis state police contingent headquarters was announced as the best contingent, while the Ampang district police headquarters was the best district during "Op Selamat 2017". — Bernama
