DUNGUN: The Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) campus in Dungun will be pioneering the solar energy system to power the campus.
Electrical Engineering Faculty senior lecturer Dr Ermeey Abd Kadir said the campus would begin installing the solar energy system in October and the system was expected to be operational in February 2018.
"With the expected four-hour usage every day, the solar energy project - Net Energy Metering will save up to 15% of Dungun UiTM's electricity bill.
"On average, the monthly electricity bill at the campus is around RM300,000 and we will pay only 85% to the Tenaga Nasional Berhad when the solar system starts its operation," he told reporters at the campus Aidilfitri open house here today.
Currently, the project is almost 50% completed and the technical process involving several parties including the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA) was in progress, Ermeey said.
Ermeey said the installation of the solar system was expected to cost about RM6 million.
"The capacity of the solar system is one megawatt and it will be used in the campus first. If there is any balance in power consumption, then we will sell it to the Tenaga Nasional Berhad," he said. — Bernama
