BUKIT MERTAJAM: A RM31.7million flood mitigation project to reduce flooding woes in several areas here is expected to begin in October.
Penang Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the project will reduce flooding in Kampung Tanah Liat, Taman Guru, Padang Lalang and Kampung Permatang Rawa.
He said the project will benefit the residents in an area which has been described as flood prone.
"Flooding in the area will reduce about 86% when the project is completed," he said when visiting the site today.
Work involves deepening and widening the 4.75 kilometre-long Sungai Permatang Rawa which has a catchment area of 5.2km².
Other components included upgrading two bridges, tidal gates at 30 river mouth outlets, installing a new trash screen and log boom and improving the drainage system.
The entire project is scheduled for completion by October 2019.
