GEORGE TOWN: The eight policemen, believed to have a role in the escape of a suspect, have been suspended pending investigations.
State police chief Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said the eight, comprising four lance corporals, three corporals and a sergeant, would take a break from duty until completion of the probe.
He said this was a usual procedure to ensure investigations would not be affected.
"They will resume their duty as usual if no wrongdoing is found," he told a press conference after attending the state police contingent's Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at the headquarters today.
Present were Penang Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Haji Abbas , his consort Toh Puan Majimor Shariff and Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Abdul Rashid Hasnon.
Chuah said the eight had been released on police bail today while remand for a 56-year-old fisherman had been extended for three days.
"So far, 15 statements have been recorded," he said, adding that efforts to search for the suspect, Anuar Ayat, 43, had been stepped up.
