PETALING JAYA: An ex-prisoner was the key man in the June 19 jailbreak of four foreign inmates from Bali's Kerobokan prison.
Ruddi Setiawan, the deputy director of special crime at Bali police, said the Indonesian ex-prisoner bought the flight tickets for the inmates and helped them check in at the airport. He now faces charges of assisting the jailbreak.
"The re-enactment is held to make it clear, how they escaped from the prison … how they can get out of the prison, go to the airport, go to East Timor. We will trace their footprints," Setiawan was quoted by The Herald Sun as saying.
The newspaper reported today that more than 200 police re-enacted the escape by Malaysian Tee Kok King, Australian Shaun Edward Davidson, Bulgarian Dimitar Nikolov Ilie, and Indian Sayed Muhammad Said.
The re-enactment, which started yesterday, would include 30 scenes, inside the prison itself and then to Bali airport where the fugitives fled to catch flights.
The four spent more than four hours draining water from the tunnel using a plastic bucket, in heavy rains, before their escape.
The first through the tunnel was Davidson, followed by Tee Kok King, who are both still on the run. The Bulgarian and Indian nationals were captured at Dili Harbour, in East Timor, on June 22.
Setiawan said the reconstruction consisted of 10 scenes inside the prison, where the two captured men played themselves. Police played the roles of Davidson and Tee. They were dressed in orange overalls and with their names on placards dangling about their necks.
The report said the four had climbed through a hole in the ceiling of their cell about 10pm on June 18 and then went to a sewer tunnel being the jail clinic. The men then scrawled to freedom about 2.30am after draining water from the hole.
The two captured men told police they had brought clean clothes with them and went into an empty building opposite the jail to change out of their muddy attire before hailing a taxi to the airport.
The re-enactment will continue today at the airport.
