MRT1 has set a high benchmark for Malaysia's future, SPAD CEO says

PETALING JAYA: The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) has set a high benchmark for Malaysia's future public transportation plan, taking into account connectivity needs, as well as the people's quality of life, said the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).
Its Chief Executive Officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah said Phase 2 of MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) line, which will be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak today (July 17) is built to last for generations to come.
"With an estimated travel time of 84 minutes (end-to-end) operating at a frequency of 3.5 minutes during peak hours, the 51 km MRT Line integrates 7 stations with existing rail lines, providing significant savings in terms of travel time.
"In addition, it also offers 14 stations equipped with park and ride facilities to encourage more commuters to leave their cars behind and transit, paving way for reduction in carbon emission."
"The seven underground stations themselves are also a visual feast for the eyes, not to mention the various features which have been incorporated into the overall design to make it friendly to commuters," Azharuddin said in a statement today.
Azharuddin added the full implementation of MRT SBK line will also uplift the number of people using the line to 400,000 every day, as well as further augment ridership to meet the 40% modal share target by 2030.
He added projects such as the MRT Line 2: Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya and the LRT3: Bandar Utama-Johan Setia are expected to unlock more transit-oriented development opportunities that will help the government recoup large investments made to improve urban rail services, as we strive to cater to the long-term growth of Greater Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley.
