KOTA BARU: Police have crippled the notorious "Harry Gunong" gang alleged to be involved in at least 20 criminal cases including armed robberies and house break-ins in Kelantan and Terengganu, with the arrest of three of its members early today.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Hasanuddin Hassan said police raided a restaurant near Jalan Pasir Puteh in Melor here about 12.10am following a tip-off that the men, all in their 20s, were present at the premises.
He said during the raid, police managed to apprehend two of the men while the third suspect, who was in a Perodua Axia car, shot at police in his bid to flee the scene.
"Subsequently, police fired five shots at the car's tyres. One of the policemen also suffered from a minor injury while arresting the (third) suspect," he told a press conference at the Kelantan police headquarters here.
Hasanuddin said one of the suspects, aged 25, from Bachok, was identified as the gang's mastermind while the two others were from Wakaf Baru in Tumpat.
"Initial investigation revealed that all of them had been detained between 28 and 31 times. Two of them have been on police's wanted list for voluntarily causing hurt and committing criminal intimidation," he said, adding that the suspects were being remanded for seven days beginning today. — Bernama
