Police fail to extend remand for suspect in sexual assault case

GEORGE TOWN: A police application to extend the remand order on a former aide to a DAP assemblyman over an alleged sexual assault incident was rejected by the magistrate's court today.
The initial two-day remand order for allegedly outraging the modesty of a 21-year-old private college student which was granted yesterday, expired today.
However, the court did not grant another extension for the man who was led to court by police officers at about 10.30am.
He is expected to be released on police bail later today.
Counsel for the accused, E. Gnasegaran said his client has given his full cooperation to the police and will be present if called up to assist in the investigation.
The incident came to light when a Facebook posting on the matter went viral on social media.
The post alleges that the incident happened at a carpark in Lebuh Pantai about 11.30pm on July 6.
The victim, known as Tan, had her first press conference yesterday flanked by her boyfriend and members of Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM) and told her side of story.
The part-time waitress claimed the man had asked for a settlement through a third party last Friday and showed her clothes that she wore during the incident at the press conference.
She described the ordeal as "humiliating and insulting" as she was working to reduce her family's burden.
Northeast district police chief ACP Anuar Omar, in a statement said, the victim's clothes has already been handed to investigators.
He said, "Statements from the girl's family have been recorded and closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage have also been obtained to be reviewed."
"Investigation papers (IPs) will be referred to the prosecution unit on Monday for further action," he added.
The case has been classified as assault or use of criminal force to a person with intent to outrage modesty under the Penal Code.
