KUALA LUMPUR: A youth was detained by traffic police in an operation in Jalan Bangsar, early today for using a name tag-sized registration number plate on his motorcycle.
The youth, in his 20's, when met by reporters, said he used the small number plates as it was the current trend among motorcyclists.
"I see friends using such number plates, perhaps they fear being summoned by the police for beating the traffic lights if they use bigger number plates (which are more noticeable).
"This is the second time I've been stopped by the police for not having a driving licence," he said.
Besides using tiny registration number plates, it was noticed that the youth's motorcycle also did not have side mirrors and other safety features.
ASP Mohd Hasbullah Saidin who led the "Op Motosikal", said using fancy and tiny registration number plates was a trend among motorcyclists these days.
"They want to have their own style, but this is among the traffic offences we (the police) are focusing on," he said.
Mohd Hasbullah said in the operation which went on for over three hours from 10pm and involving 54 policemen and officers, 418 summonses were issued for various traffic offences.
"This operation was conducted also with the aim of curbing unhealthy activities, especially with the 29th SEA Games approaching."
He said in the operation, 12 motorcycles were also seized and two individuals detained as they were believed to be intoxicated. — Bernama
