SHEFFIELD Hallam University is one of the largest universities in the UK, and they have the ambition to become the world's leading applied university.
The university is continually investing in its facilities and courses to ensure they replicate what their students will be using in their chosen industry or sector. In the last decade, the university has invested in more than £100 million (RM5.5 billion) in learning and teaching spaces and facilities.
The university is proud to be a global university and its international connections gives them the opportunity to bring Sheffield Hallam to the world – and to invite students, partners and researchers to be part of the Sheffield Hallam community in the UK.
"We welcome students to Sheffield from more than 120 countries, and we have worked closely with partners in Malaysia for nearly two decades. Our work with Malaysia began with Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC), who we have worked with since 1999. We also work closely with other partner institutions including INTI International University and Colleges," said James Richardson, global engagement director of Sheffield Hallam University.
"Students in Malaysia are a valuable part of our diverse and vibrant community of students and graduates. We are also pleased to have an active alumni network in Malaysia, who we regularly invite to meet Sheffield Hallam staff and attend networking events.
"Our university office in Subang Jaya has given us decades of experience at supporting Malaysian students, whether they are studying in Malaysia or UK. Whenever a student has a question, we have the expertise to respond quickly via email, phone or by a chat with our team here," he added.
All of its programmes are focused on an applied approach. The university embeds industry knowledge into all of its teaching so students graduate with practical, relevant experience. Many of its courses are accredited by professional bodies allowing them to know what they are teaching is in demand in a particular industry or sector.
"Our applied approach makes us different. We ensure that all of our courses include industry or sector experience, through placements, work experience, case studies or consultancy projects. Our careers service was recently rated the best in UK, with a 96% student satisfaction rate," Richardson said.
The university works with thousands of businesses to offer students unique opportunities to practise applying their learning to real projects or placements. Students have the chance to work on real-life consultancy projects with some of the UK's most forward-thinking and innovative businesses.
One of the many ways the university helps students gain valuable industry experience is through its award-winning Venture Matrix scheme. The unique work-based learning scheme allows more than 3,000 students each year to carry out research projects with the advice and support of industry experts.
In a recent project, for example, a group of Malaysian students were asked to present a business plan for a biotechnology company who were interested in expanding their operations internationally.
"As one of the UK's most popular universities, we welcome students to a diverse range of courses in different subject areas at undergraduate, postgraduate and research levels. Our teaching and research staff are industry and academic experts. They bring an in-depth understanding of their industry or sector to their teaching so you benefit from the wealth of their experience.
"Sheffield is a welcoming, multicultural city which is what makes the study destination of choice for more than 60,000 students. The city offers the best of both worlds, with all the amenities, culture and entertainment of a big city and the peaceful, green spaces of the countryside. Many of our students also take advantage of Sheffield's excellent transport links to travel to cities across the UK and Europe," Richardson said.
The university is committed to continue strong links with Malaysia and is proud that more than 11,000 students have graduated with a Sheffield Hallam degree.
"Our international connections are fundamental to our ambitions as a global university. We always welcome conversations about any new ways which we can work with partners in Malaysia or collaborate with educational or industry organisations in the region. We are also interested in further research collaboration, student exchanges and summer programmes," Richardson said.
