Student fined RM1,600 for drink driving

KUALA LUMPUR: A college student was fined RM1,600, in default a month's jail, by the Traffic Court here today for drink driving.
Magistrate Maizatul Munirah Abd Rahman meted out the fine on Megat Amir Asyraf Zahari, 26, who pleaded guilty to the charge.
He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol at Jalan Hang Tuah here at 3.55am last June 18.
The charge, under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, provides a fine of up to RM6,000, and is liable to imprisonment for up to 12 months, upon conviction.
Earlier, traffic prosecuting officer Inspector Hashimah Hashim asked the court to impose a sentence which could serve as a lesson since the accused is a Muslim. — Bernama
