There is nothing to hide on 1MDB: Apandi

PETALING JAYA: There is nothing to hide on the 1MDB issue and I have nothing to fear, said Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali (pix).
He was responding to Pakatan Harapan chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed's warning that he could be held liable for hiding evidence in the investigations into 1MDB funds.
"I fear no one, including Mahathir. I don't fear human beings but I fear Allah. Whatever I do as the AG is all based on the available facts as contained in the investigation papers," he told theSun via whatsapp.
Apandi asserted that he had nothing to hide.
On Monday night at Pakatan Harapan's talk, Mahathir had told the crowd that should the opposition coalition win, Apandi would be questioned if he had hidden any criminal evidence pertaining to 1MDB.
"I am not a lawyer. A crime cannot be hidden under OSA (Official Secrets Act). Hiding evidence of a crime is an offence. The AG may have committed a crime if he had hidden evidence to 1MDB," Mahathir was quoted as saying.
The former prime minister added that this was among the reasons why the opposition coalition needs to win the next General Election (GE14), to question Apandi.
Apandi who replaced Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Patail cleared Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak in the 1MDB scandal.
The AG confirmed this last year, and cleared the prime minister.
United States Department of Justice (DoJ) had filed a civil forfeiture suit against assets allegedly purchased with embezzled 1MDB funds.
In June this year, it filed another suit, bringing the total value of assets sought by the DoJ to US$1.8 billion (RM7.7 billion).
The DoJ also charged that from 2009 through 2015, more than US$4.5 billion (RM19 billion) belonging to 1MDB had been diverted by high-level officials of the fund and their associates.
Apandi again dismissed this suit by DoJ citing lack of credible evidence.
