Amanah women's wing call for ban on 'Despacito'

PETALING JAYA: The popular and catchy Spanish single Despacito should be banned from local radio channels, says Parti Amanah Negara women's wing, Awan.
Awan's Art and Culture Bureau chief Atriza Umar said it was disturbing to have youngsters enjoying the song by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and rapper Daddy Yankee without knowing the meaning of its lyrics.
"Even Malay radio channels are playing the song, causing an almost out of control phenomenon. We would like to call for a ban on this song as well as similar songs that have sexual or violent meaning in their lyrics. These type of songs are not suitable for our Eastern and Islamic culture," Atriza said in a statement today.
Atriza criticised the authorities for failing to censor such "troublesome" songs and claimed that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has an obligation to play.
"They have to be strict in their role in such issues which could corrupt morals in this country."
However, she credits some artistes and individuals who have taken the initiative in changing the lyrics to be more "polite" though it could be a copyright problem.
"Hopefully our local talents can produce better entertainment which has strong moral values as well as a high commercial value. We respect entertainment rights but there has to be a clear guideline so that entertainment does not corrupt but makes us better human beings."
