GEORGE TOWN: Police are searching for the person who wrote an online article which claimed a couple had engaged in sexual intercourse by the side of a highway in Jawi on the Penang mainland.
State police chief Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said police want to track the reporter of the online portal which reported the alleged incident.
He said the portal was not based in Malaysia as it was registered in Azerbaijan and the IP (Internet Protocol) address was traced to a location in Pennsylvania, United States of America (USA).
He however said the possibility remained that the person who wrote the report could be in Malaysia as the articles published mostly touched on Penang.
He said police will investigation and will take action under indecency laws against the couple if what is published was true.
"If the news is fake we will refer the portal to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC)," he said in a press conference today adding the portal has not been accessible since Monday.
Meanwhile, Chuah said the hunt for a lock-up detainee which escaped police custody is still ongoing.
He said police were still in the process of tracking down the suspect which fled on July 9 allegedly with the assistance of policemen.
The escapee, was one among three, who had feigned illness to be allowed out and were taken to visit their families instead of the hospital.
He said investigations found the three had allegedly given some RM6,000 to be shared among the policemen who were allegedly involved.
Eight rank and file policemen have been released from remand after they were detained and have been subsequently suspended from duties pending investigations.
