KOTA KINABALU: The food crops cultivation project to be implemented by the Federal Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Felcra) on a 3,800ha site in Pulau Banggi at a cost of RM100 million is expected to kick off before December this year, according to Felcra Berhad chairman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.
He said the project would focus on the cultivation of food crops, such as coconuts, pineapples, and bananas.
"The project is part of Felcra's strategies to collaborate with several state governments to plant food crops in line with the national food security policy and as an effort to reduce import of food products which has been on the rise each year," he told reporters after attending Felcra's Aidilfitri do and presentation of its corporate donations here today.
Apart from creating jobs for the local residents in Pulau Banggi, the project which would be implemented with the cooperation of Sabah Rubber Industry Authority would also bring about obvious impact on the basic infrastructure in the island, which would include upgraded roads and water and electricity supplies, he added. — Bernama
