Gerakan installs warning signs at drain where businessman suffered fatal fall

GEORGE TOWN: Gerakan today installed two warning signs near the drain where a businessman fell and drowned during flash floods last week.
State party vice chairman Oh Tong Keong and his party colleagues fixed the signs at the monsoon drain at Jalan Tun Dr Awang.
He said his party decided to put up the signs as the relevant authorities had not moved fast enough.
He said the opening to the drain should have been closed by now or fencing installed at the sides of the drain opening to prevent similar incidents.
"It has been six days since the incident but why is there no action from the state to resolve the issue.
"If they love Penang then do something to save the Penang people," he said after installing the signs.
Businessman Lim Kean Chuan, 59, drowned in the submerged monsoon drain on July 14 when floods hit about 6am.
He had exited his car after water entered the engine and it is believed he could not see the submerged monsoon drain and his body was recovered by firemen hours later.
As a precautionary measure, the Penang Public Works Department has installed poles, and hung reflectors on wires pending the construction of a permanent wall around the drain.
