JOHOR BARU: Johor plans to have its own high-speed broadband connectivity infrastructure by 2019.
Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said with the new infrastructure, the business sector and end-users will enjoy cheaper and speedy internet service
He said current broadband providers in the state can subscribe to the new digital infrastructure.
"It is only for Johor, it is speedier and cheaper," he said after attending the Aidilfitri open house hosted by Kumpulan Prasarana Rakyat Johor Sdn Bhd (KPRJ) here today.
KPRJ CEO Abd Razak Mohd Yusoff said the company had received a lot of complaints that internet services in the state could not meet the needs of various sectors, like the animation industry.
They are forced to send their animation production project to foreign countries because of the slow internet speed.
He said, the Iskandar Malaysia Integrated Information-Communication Infrastructure (IM3i) project will help Johor to shift to the digital economy.
It is learnt that the project has the blessing from the Federal government.
Earlier, it was reported that the Johor Government will be expanding free wireless broadband facilities to 74 hotspots statewide this year.
Forty-nine hotspots will be in rural areas and the rest in urban areas.
At the moment, a total of 135 Johor WiFi hotspots activated in the state involve urban areas.
