GEORGE TOWN: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad admitted that DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang was his enemy.
Mahathir, however, said that insistence from the people during the Citizens' Declaration to change the government had united both of them for the first time to fight for one common objective.
"Since the launch of the Citizens' Declaration, we had the intention to unite the opposition parties.
"In the Citizens' Declaration, we saw people from all walks of life, political parties, non-governmental organisation and leaders have come together to support the movement," he said during the Penang PPBM Hari Raya open house at Long Say Hall in Jalan Burma today.
He said at first his supporters were not in favour of his new found "friend" and the support for him also dwindled.
He added that the support for him had increased since the cooperation between him, Kit Siang and Anwar Ibrahim materialised in Pakatan Harapan (PH).
"This is a unity that we achieved as we have the same objective which is to change the government that rules by penyangak (crook)," he said to the thunderous applause from the crowd in the hall.
Mahathir also pointed out in his speech that it is the people's duty to bring down Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak hence PH was formed as it was designed to topple the prime minister as wanted by the people.
He said PH was created to form a government that works for the rakyat who is burden with difficulties due to the current premiership, fix the problems caused by the current government and restore the financial and economy well-being of the country.
"PH is the people's coalition of opposition parties, we will work together hard to win the next election.
"For this this we need your support, the coalition won't win on its own. It can only win when people realise the lies that were made by Najib. People must support the coalition as the next general election is coming," he said.
More than 3,000 people thronged the hall to catch a glimpse of the statesman and his wife Tun Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.
Also present were PPBM president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, Penang chairman Marzuki Yahya.
PH leaders such as DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, Penang PKR chairman Datuk Mansor Othman, Amanah president Mohammad Sabu, and Penang Amanah president Datuk Mujahid Yusoff Rawa attended the event as well.
