Police waiting for blood and urine test of driver who drove against traffic

BUTTERWORTH: Police are waiting for the results of blood and urine tests of the driver who allegedly drove against traffic on the North South Expressway (NSE) last Saturday.

Penang Traffic Police chief Supt Roslan Ali said the suspect was still recovering from his injuries at the Sungai Petani hospital.

He said the 31-year-old man suffered a fractured hand and that the results are expected to be released on Monday.

"We will take him into custody once he is discharged from hospital," he told theSun when contacted.

Police are investigating the case for reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Five drivers were hurt during the 1.30am incident at KM124.3 of the NSE.

The driver of the car driving the wrong way was heading to Sungai Petani from Butterworth before making a sudden U-turn at KM116 of the highway.

Doing so is believed to have resulted in a five-car pileup and fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

This is not the first time Malaysian drivers have been found driving against traffic as two were killed after a man drove his
car against traffic on the Jalan Ipoh-Lumut road and collided with a trailer.

In June, police detained a 56-year-old woman for driving against traffic at the Second Link Expressway near Gelang Patah in Johor.

A 29-year-old man was detained after he allegedly drove his car the wrong way at KM34 of the NSE near Kulai, Johor on June 1.

On March 14, this year, Ng Pei Ven, 19, drove against traffic and allegedly caused the death of motorist Mohamad Fandi Rosli, 26.

She has since been charged for driving under the influence of drugs to the extent of being incapable of controlling her car and can be sentenced to a maximum 10 years in jail, and fined a maximum of RM20,000 and have her driving license suspended for five years.
