KUANTAN: A water tank atop a four-storey commercial building here burst today afternoon and damaged a wall, sending broken concrete slabs crashing to the ground and injuring four people.
At least six motorcycles and one car, which were parked along the side entrance of the mall, were also damaged during the incident that took place at Kompleks Teruntum.
Building occupants and passers-by had a rude shock when they heard a loud bang around 1pm today, before water started gushing down from the top of the building, sending those nearby scrambling for safety.
The victims were believed to have been walking near the building when the sudden gush of water from the tank caused parts of the building's wall to collapse.
Kuantan Fire and Rescue Department chief Kamerul Bieza Mohamed Kassim said they received a distress call a few minutes after the incident and immediately deployed 10 men in a fire engine and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) team to the scene.
The building has also been evacuated and cordoned off from the public, he said.
"When we arrived, we found that a water tank had burst, causing some parts of the wall that held the tank to give way, and water gushing down from the broken tank at the top floor," he told theSun today.
Kamerul Bieza said he understood that while some individuals were taken to hospital for check-ups, no serious injuries were reported.
It is believed that the water tank that burst today had been in use for over 40 years.
Pictures and videos of the incident went viral on social media today, with netizens sharing clips of what looked like a "waterfall" coming out of the top floor.
The incident comes less than three months after a similar occurrence took place at the Pangsapuri Cheras Utama in Kuala Lumpur, where a water tank atop the 12-storey apartment block burst and damaged 12 apartment units, sending concrete slabs to the ground.
While no one was hurt in that incident, it raised questions about who should be responsible for the maintenance and safety checks, particularly of ageing water tanks at high-rise buildings in the country.
