KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector General of police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar admitted that bribery exists in the police force but added that they are committed to weeding it out.
"It exists, I don't deny that corruption exists in the police force," he said yesterday.
Khalid was speaking to reporters at the nationwide corruption free pledge signing ceremony between the Royal Malaysian Police and the MACC at Pulapol here.
"By taking pledges like this, it is one of the ways we can ensure that this does not happen in the police force," he said.
He said since the police started the standard compliance and integrity department (JIPS), there has been an increase of bribery and abuse of power cases in the force but that is because JIPS is weeding them out.
"When we started JIPS we saw that there was an increase in abuse of power and bribery but that doesn't mean that it has increased, it just means that enforcement in spotting these cases is better. What's important is we can control the police force from being involved in bribery," he said.
When asked if taking anti-corruption pledges is new in the police force, Khalid said that everyone in the police force takes a pledge not to be involved in corruption.
He said that the police force is targeting zero cases of bribery ideally.
"We will take the steps necessary to make sure that the police isn't involved in bribery," he said.
The pledged signing ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, MACC chief commissioner Datuk Dzulkifli Ahmad and Deputy IGP Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim.
