KUALA LUMPUR: Construction industry players in the country have been urged to uphold the responsibility of carrying out and implementing projects meticulously in the highest possible quality standards for sustainability.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof (pix) said they should do this while at the same time reaping the benefit of economic prosperity that translated into numerous opportunities for the industry.
"I believe that sustainability is one of the most important marks as a 'compulsory subject' in the industry's report card which reflects the attitude towards the well-being of workers, the public and the environment," he said when launching a civil engineering conference here today.
Fadillah noted that the Malaysian construction industry had a bright future considering the numerous mega infrastructure projects which would continue to fuel the sector.
Among them are the East Coast Rail Line (ECRL), Lightrail Transit 3, Mass Rapid Transit 2, Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (Rapid), Pan Borneo Highway in Sabah and Sarawak, High Speed Rail (HSR) and Damansara-Shah Alam Elevated Expressway (DASH).
On another note, Fadillah expressed confidence that civil engineers in Malaysia and beyond  were prepared to embrace sustainability through the many methods and approaches that could be adopted towards achieving it.
The four-day Global Civil Engineering Conference 2017 themed 'Steering Global Sustainability through Civil Engineering' is organised by the Universiti Putra Malaysia's Department of Civil Engineering together with the Public Works Department,  Board of Engineers Malaysia and Construction Industry Development Board. — AFP
