PETALING JAYA: Twelve protected eagles were seized by the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) from a 41-year-old man in Bukit Jenun, Pendang, Kedah, recently.
The birds that were seized included the crested goshawk (Accipiter trivirgatus), bat hawk (Macheiramphus alcinus) and collared falconet (Microhietax caerulescens).
Kedah Perhilitan director Inche Ali @ Muhammad Ali Che Aman said a team consisting of eight Perhilitan staff seized the eagles after the man failed to produce a permit to keep them.
"The birds are a protected species under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010," he said in a statement today.
Stating that the suspect is being investigated for keeping the birds without a proper permit, Inche Ali said that keeping protected birds without a licence is an offence under Section 68(2(a) of the Act which carries a maximum fine of RM100,000 or imprisonment of up to three years' or both, upon conviction.
