3,200 cartons of contraband cigarettes seized from Malaysia-registered lorry

SINGAPORE: A total of 3,200 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes were seized from a Malaysia-registered lorry, driven by a 34-year-old male Malaysian this morning, according to the Singapore Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA).
In a statement here, ICA said at about 6am, its officers directed the arriving lorry for further checks at the Woodlands Checkpoint.
During the course of checks, an ICA officer had noticed anomalies in the scanned images of the lorry which was conveying a consignment declared to be wafer cup cones and chocolate dips.
The duty-unpaid cigarettes were found to be concealed among the consignment.
ICA said the driver, duty-unpaid cigarettes and lorry were handed over to Singapore Customs for investigations.
The vehicle used in the commission of such offences is liable to be forfeited.
ICA noted that the total duty and Goods and Services Tax evaded amounted to about S$248,320 (S$1=RM3.13) and S$18,400 respectively. — Bernama
