KUALA LUMPUR: Schoolmates Siti Nadhirah Mohmed Razip and Siti Nuradila Zulkifli have been awarded the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship to pursue a short term Mandarin course in Taiwan.

"Both of us feel very thankful to be granted this golden opportunity as it is an honour for us to be a part of the 38 Malaysian students who will be furthering our studies in Taiwan," Siti Nadhirah told reporters after receiving her scholarship certificate from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office representative James Chang Chi-Ping earlier today.

Siti Nadhirah said she decided to pursue a course in Mandarin due to the encouragement of her lecturer.
While Siti Nuradila, an architect, said she decided to take up Mandarin to gain more opportunities in her career path, adding that most architectural firms in Malaysia are Chinese-owned.
Both girls added that although it would take them sometime to adapt to the new culture, the availability of halal food and prayer rooms in Taiwanese tertiary institutions would make it easier for them in their new environment.
The availability of such facilities in Taiwanese tertiary institutions are a result of a policy implemented by the Education Ministry to ensure convenience for international students.

Siti Nadhirah and Siti Nuradila are among 38 successful applicants for the Taiwan Education Ministry's Taiwan Scholarship and Huayu Enrichment Scholarship.
The scholarship would allow them to pursue an academic degree and a short term Mandarin course.
Chang said he hoped the scholarship recipients would be able to play an important role in strengthening the bilateral academic collaboration and cultural exchange between both countries.

"We are glad to know that not only Chinese students had applied for our scholarship, the number of non-Chinese applicants who wish to undertake academic degrees in Taiwan is also increasing every year and one of the popular options for these students are the English-taught programmes offered by universities in Taiwan," he said.
