GEORGE TOWN: The water disruption experienced by residents of Teluk Kumbar and Gertak Sanggul today was caused when a car crashed into a water main and damaged the air valve.

In a Facebook post, the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) said the car had crashed into a 450mm water pipline near Jalan Teluk Kumbar which damaged a 200mm air valve.

The pipeline has been shut down to enable emergency welding works to repair the damage.

Other areas affected by the unscheduled water supply interruption includes Pekan Teluk Kumbar until Puspakom, Kampung Matahari Naik, Kampung Matahari Jatuh, Kampung Masjid and Gertak Sanggul.

"The estimated timeline for the repair works is five hours," the post said.

Meanwhile, Southwest district police chief Supt AA Anbalagan said the driver was heading towards Bayan Lepas during the 1.30pm incident.

He said police believe he was trying to avoid a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction but lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the pipe.

He said the 20-year-old youth was not hurt and that there was no elements of alcohol or drug abuse in the case.
