SIK: A Bernama stringer from Baling district, Che Saad Nordin, 67, and former Kedah cyclist, Ahmad Nizam Hassan, 47, today began their Merdeka Cycling Expedition in conjunction with the upcoming National Day celebrations.
They will cycle 2,300km around the Malaysian peninsula in 29 days, and are expected to end the expedition on Aug 30 at Dataran Beris, near here.
Che Saad said the expedition was aimed at raising the spirit of patriotism and love for the country, especially among the younger generation and schoolchildren, where both of them would also be distributing the Jalur Gemilang.
"I have cycled around Peninsular Malaysia six times. Although I am getting older, it is not an obstacle for me and my partner to enliven the month of independence this August," he told reporters, here, today.
They were flagged off by Sik Member of Parliament Dr Mansor Abdul Rahman and Jeneri asemblyman Mahadzir Abdul Hamid at Dataran Lestari this morning.

Meanwhile, Mahadzir said he would be touring across the district in an effort to foster love for the country among the younger generation.
"Many young people have forgotten the history of our independence and we want them to know the sacrifices made by our forefathers to be where we are today," he said. — Bernama
