Yemeni victim held over death of snatch thief

SERDANG: A Yemeni student who fell victim to a snatch thief ended up getting arrested after he knocked down the crook with his car, killing the man on the spot today.
Serdang police chief ACP Megat Mohamad Aminuddin Megat Alias said yesterday that the Yemeni who is in his 20's was having a drink at a food stall at SP2, Serdang Perdana, Seri Kembangan at about 3.30am when a motorcyclist pulled over next to him and snatched the foreigner's shoulder bag.
He said as the thief fled on his motorcycle, the Yemeni who is a student at the Tenaga Nasional University (Uniten) jumped into his car and gave chase.
Megat said after a three-kilometre pursuit, the victim caught up with the thief at a traffic light junction near the One South apartments and allegedly crashed into his motorcycle.
He said the suspected thief fell off his machine and was killed after suffering serious head injuries.
Megat said the foreigner's bag containing his passport, RM4,000 in local and US currency and other documents were found on the 25-year-old dead thief.
He said the Yemeni was arrested soon after for investigation of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304 of the Penal Code.
Megat said checks showed that the suspected thief had three previous criminal records for causing hurt and grievous hurt, criminal intimidation, and a drug related offence.
He said police will seek a remand order on the foreigner tomorrow.
"We do not encourage the public to take the law into their own hands as it can endanger their lives and that of others. Instead, the public should channel information on such crimes to the police so that we can take the necessary action," he said.
