PETALING JAYA: A police inspector was detained last Thursday for allegedly taking kickbacks of tens of thousands of ringgit to free a kidnap case suspect early this year.
Selangor police CID chief SAC Fadzil Ahmat said the 32-year-old inspector is attached to the Gombak district police headquarters.
He said the officer is with the district CID and an investigations officer of a kidnap case involving 33-year-old transport company manager at Bandar Country Homes, Rawang on Jan 26 this year.
Fadzil said the officer is under a remand order for further investigations.
It is learnt that the the officer had allegedly freed one of the five suspects who were detained over the kidnap case after receiving kickbacks.
The kidnap victim was freed after his family paid a RM300,000 ransom to his kidnappers.
A special police team managed to trace the suspects just hours later — arresting five men and recovering the ransom money in full.
