KUALA LUMPUR: Six Customs officers, allegedly in cahoots with underworld elements smuggling drugs into the country, were arrested by police today.
The suspects, in their 30s and 50s, were nabbed at the KL International Airport (KLIA) by a federal police CID team in an operation at about 2pm, sources told theSun.
The six were believed to have colluded with the "360 Devan Gang", notorious for its involvement in drug processing, trafficking and other illegal activities.
The detained officers comprised a customs superintendent while the rest were assistant superintendents, stationed at the KLIA's baggage scanning unit, export unit, passenger clearance unit and the customs mail and courier unit.
Federal police CID director Commissioner Datuk Mohmad Salleh confirmed the arrests.
"We are investigating to ascertain how long this had been going on and the extent of their involvement with the gang," he said.
Last March, 29 people, including a "datuk" and a politician, of the 360 Devan Gang were charged in court for their participation in an organised crime group.
Sources said the six customs officers are currently in a police lock-up in Selangor, maybe held up to 28 days under Sosma laws.
Following information on the gang's widespread illegal drug activities in the country, police launched a blitz against the 360 Devan Gang under Ops Cantas Khas since early this year, nabbing several dozen key members of the group.
