GEORGE TOWN: The public have been visiting the Penang Accountant-General's Department since a month ago, to check if they have unclaimed money from the department.
"At one time there were about 700 to 800 people who visited our counter at Komtar to check if they have unclaimed money," an officer who declined to be named told theSun.
She said because of the influx of people, the department would set up a registery at the third floor of the building.
The officer said those who have unclaimed money, need to submit forms with supporting documents, which would be sent to Putrajaya.
Factory worker M. Saravanan, 36, said he was surprised to find out that the public can check for unclaimed monies from the department.
"I was told by my friends that we can check, who knows I might have some substantial monies kept in the Accountant-General's department," said the father of two.
A senior citizen who only wanted to be known as Ong, said her friend had more than RM20,000 unclaimed monies.
Ong said she also wanted to know whether she had money from her old savings account and insurance policy.
Twenty-five counters have been set up nationwide – 13 in Peninsular Malaysia, seven in Sarawak, four in Sabah and one to be opened in Putrajaya soon, to allow Malaysians to make claims.
Those who want to claim the money need to submit forms with supporting documents at these counters.
It was reported that a total of RM5.7 billion in unclaimed monies from 1977 till June 30 this year is still being kept by the Accountant-General's Department.
