PETALING JAYA: Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali has sent a notice of demand to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar for him to take immediate action in arresting businessman Low Taek Jho or Jho Low (pix).
Azmin's lawyer Latheefa Koya said the letter was sent because the IGP has the duty to take steps to track down Jho Low.
"The IGP has a duty to take these steps in tracking him down, that includes seeking Interpol's assistance to arrest and extradite him," she said.
She also said the IGP has 14 days to reply the letter failing which, legal action will be taken.
She added that Azmin had sent this letter because Low is suspected of committing various offences under the Penal Code and therefore can be considered a wanted person involved in criminal acts.
The letter states: "Low Taek Jho is suspected of committing criminal breach of trust, under Section 406 of the Penal Code (Act 574), or Section 409, also Section 120B in Act 574. In addition, he is suspected of committing offences against the provisions within the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001,"
She added that Azmin will seek a court order to compel the IGP to take action.
"So far no action has been taken by the IGP to secure him to be brought back," she said.
She suggested that Malaysia work with Interpol to issue a red notice for Low so that he can be tracked down and extradited.
Low, who is currently untraceable, is closely linked to the 1 Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal where billions in funds were allegedly swindled by certain individuals.
Low has, in the past, denied claims that he was involved in the 1MDB issue.
At press time, Khalid was not available for comment on the matter.
