PETALING JAYA: Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli has raised over RM1.5 million in 10 days to pay for the RM300,000 in damages and costs in the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) suit against him.
The RM1,585,014.49 collected is five times the amount needed to pay NFC.
The PKR vice-president said the 7,435 contributors were from all walks of life in a Facebook posting yesterday.
He said 1,575 of the donors were Malays, 2,903 Chinese, 348 Indians, 40 Sabah bumiputeras and 91 Sarawak bumiputeras.
"About 2,300 people contributed anonymously at the cash deposit machines, so we are unable to identify them," he said.
He added that 84% of the contributions were in small amounts ranging from RM10 to RM200.
Rafizi said RM300,000 would be used to comply with the court order while the balance go to the funding of Invoke's ongoing campaigns in 50 marginal constituencies.
He added that Invoke would provide quarterly reports on how the money was spent and the audited financial statements would be made public.
The Kuala Lumpur High Court ruled in October that Rafizi had defamed NFC and its chairman Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Salleh Ismail.
The court awarded a total of RM200,000 damages to Salleh and NFC. Rafizi was also ordered to pay cost of RM100,000 to Salleh and his company.
