SK Long Sepiling wins Best Storytelling KWN Global Summit Award

KUCHING: A video entitled 'The Power of Hands' produced by students of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Long Sepiling, Baram has won the Best Storytelling Award at the Kid Witness News (KWN) Global Summit 2017 in Tokyo, Japan yesterday.
The video in the Kayan and Iban languages of a duration of 4 minutes, 54 seconds, which tells the story of why humans need to appreciate the hands, a priceless gift from God, was named the winner from among nominations from 18 countries.
Contacted by Bernama,  SK Long Sepiling mathematics teacher, Muhammad Saffuan Jaffar said the idea for the video was mooted by six students, namely Anilov Fabien Tingang,13, Juwita Ulean, 12, Fiona Fredick, 12, and Michael Nyamun, 11, with the help of their teachers.
“I feel very happy, touched and proud because we (teachers) in the interior managed to prove that rural students also have the potential to be on par with those in the urban areas and, in fact, able to be the pride of the nation at the international level.
“Through the jury’s commentary, the team also gained new ideas to produce other videos in future, the jury wants the video produced to have a clear and global message through the voice of children,” said  Muhammad Saffuan, who also attended the presentation ceremony in Tokyo with Science and Bahasa Melayu teacher, Fadhli Ab Salam.
SK Long Sepiling, which has nine students and 11 teachers, including the headmaster, is located in the Baram sub-district and it takes three hours by express boat from Marudi to reach the school.
At the event, Michael represented three of his schoolmates to receive the trophy and certificate of participation which was presented by Duane Paul Kale of the International Paralympic Committee Governing Board.
Commenting on the video, Muhammad Saffuan said the video production began in mid-August last year after the students returned from the KWN training in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, which later saw them winning the international level competition in November.
“The video was completed within one month and teachers, school staff and villagers also helped out during the shooting of the video,” he added.
Organised by Panasonic Corporation, KWN is an educational programme designed to support the video production of elementary, junior high, and high school students around the world with the KWN concept of "The World Through Their Eyes”. — Bernama
