PADANG RENGAS: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) should investigate former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the wealth of his sons, says Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz.
He said it was not fair that only Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was investigated for allegedly possessing RM230 million as claimed by Tun Dr Mahathir.
"If Ahmad Zahid dares to say he is willing to be investigated, I feel it would not be fair if only the DPM is investigated, the person making the allegation (Dr Mahathir) should also be probed over his sons' wealth.
"We also want to know how his sons suddenly became rich," he told reporters after opening the Padang Rengas Umno division delegates' conference at Dewan Mellinium in Lubuk Merbau here which was attended by 328 delegates including the Youth, Wanita and Putri wings.
He was commenting on Tun Dr Mahathir's recent statements which raised the issue of the asset declaration by Ahmad Zahid when he was appointed Umno Youth chief including having RM230 million in his bank account.
Mohamed Nazri said the wealth owned by Ahmad Zahid was acquired from his business after quitting as political secretary to Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak.
He said Tun Mahathir attacked Ahmad Zahid as the former prime minister could not topple Najib who have the solid support of Umno members.
Earlier, the Umno Supreme Council member cum Padang Rengas Umno division chief in his speech said the loyalty of Umno members to the party was very important to ensure other parties could not easily agitate and tarnish the party.
"If a ship loses its captain, we would not know where we are heading to land. There is only one captain and if we start believing other people and did not trust the captain, the ship will ultimately sink," he said. — Bernama
