KUALA LUMPUR: Armed with a spirit to promote awareness for the need for greater unity among Malaysians, about 40 cyclists embarked their journey on the Projek57 Unity Ride, to the first pit-stop at IOI City Mall Putrajaya.
The 57km Projek57 Unity Ride, which flagged off from Dataran Merdeka, this morning will consist of nine legs across the Peninsular, Sabah and Sarawak.
With the upcoming Merdeka and Malaysia Day celebrations, the cyclists will travel nationwide until Sept 16, with an aim to unearth stories of hope, unity, bonds and relationships among Malaysians.
"We are inspired by the vision of our first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, who said: 'Our future depends on how well many different kinds of people can live and work together'.
"Unity is something we cannot take for granted. We live in a beautiful country and subconsciously whether we realise it or not, we love our diversity," Projek57 founder Syed Sadiq Albar told Bernama during the event.
The cyclists were flagged off in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building here this morning by former Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chairman Tan Sri Dr Syed Hamid Syed Jaafar Albar and Eco World executive director Liew Tian Xiong.
Projek57 was founded by Syed Sadiq and Collin Swee in August 2015 to promote unity in the country by various fun-filled activities.
A cyclist,  Loo Chin Jun, 38, who took part in the Unity Ride, hoped to see the whole of Malaysia united through such events.
"I just would like to see people come together, forget about their skin colour and focus to make our country stronger through the elements of unity," said Loo, a media practitioner.
The ride is expected to see the participation of some 100 cyclists from different states throughout the country including Kampar in Perak, Penang, and Kota Tinggi, Johor.
Projek57 Unity Ride is held in partnership with Eco World Development Group Berhad, Allianz Malaysia and Touch 'n Go Sdn Bhd alongside 16 affiliate partners.
